I believe strongly in the power of narrative to shape and heal. The stories we tell about ourselves hold the potential to empower us, and allow us to own our truths.
This becomes particularly important in situations in which we find ourselves challenged or dismissed. I’ve experienced such situations on both a large and small scale — everything from a court case to a literary rejection — and every time what has saved me from internalizing other people’s judgments and negative opinions is a steadfast refusal to stray from my own solid course, my inner voice that wisely whispers: What they said doesn’t matter. This is your reality, your truth, your perspective, and it matters.
On more than one occasion, that reminder has saved my sanity and, by extension, my life. Such is the power of truth-telling and narrative-honoring.
